How Does Shaking Medicine Work?

Shaking Medicine taps into the natural tremor mechanism that you’re born with. To allow spontaneous shaking is your birthright! This neurogenic tremoring process regulates your nervous system by shifting you into the parasympathetic state (rest and digest), where your body’s innate healing functions thrive complementing all aspects of your health and wellbeing. It acts as nervous system hygiene, like brushing your teeth for the electrics of your body. It both tonifies and cleanses you by:

Awakening Spontaneous Shaking: What It Feels Like

As you begin learning Shaking Medicine, spontaneous tremors awaken gradually, guided by your body’s instinctive intelligence. The experience is unique and evolves over time:

  • Initial Stage ~ Finding the Shake: You may use any of our many strategies,such as moving as slowly and relaxed as you can through ranges of motion. You'll be feeling for particular sensations such as an unexpected jolt or quake or lack of smoothness that signals a potential tremoring spot. By micro moving and slowing down and relaxing further where these sensations occur, you gradually allow the tremoring to express by letting go into it and eventually you can hang out in them sustainably.

  • Evolving Tremors ~ Building Trust: Tremors often begin in an isolated area, like the legs or big muscles groups as they tend to be easier to get going at first, and will spread and evolve as you tune into and relax into them. Over time, they will evolve to move through the whole body bit by bit and eventually become full-body expressions, connecting all parts of the body. In the early stages we are building our relationship to them, learning to turn them on and off (for safety) and to learn to trust this part of us. As we build trust over time we are able to go deeper into the process.

  • Varied Expressions ~ Moving You How You Need: Tremoring may appear as sporadic jolts, morse code-like vibrations, wavelike undulations, spiraling, body parts spontaneously squeezing and stretching, emotions expressing, sounds emerging, and more. Tremoring may go for a while and then stop, requiring you to revisit strategies for tuning in again to re-engage the tremoring or to activate it in new body parts. We promote a sustainable 'less is more' approach so that we regularly stop and stop, rest, and integrate the process.

  • Resolving Blockages ~ Primal Instinct Takes Over: Tremors oscillate between sporadic and flowing movements, working through physical and energetic blockages and even emotional, trauma, and mental blockages as you go deeper. As one wave resolves a blockage, a new wave emerges to address the next blockage, supporting ongoing trauma release and integration. As we surrender deeply to this, allow and trust it, the mechanism will move us as we need to be moved from the logical thinking mind letting go to the animalistic instinct. The intelligence of how this moves us is more from the primal-animal mind and the level of our nervous system, which the logical thinking mind can't really comprehend just like our thinking mind can't tell our immune system what to do, it just does it subconsciously.

Relaxation, consistency, and patience are key—less is more. This process awakens our intuitive and instinctive intelligences as you embody your body’s innate wisdom. This is a small sample of what it can be like. There are many possibilities as we all have unique life experiences, injuries, suppressed emotions, traumas, etc. that are bottled up within. Imagine that we have years and decades of pent up charges, tensions, and blocked up energy that make this kind of 'trauma onion' that is all bottled up from not embodying this birthright. The intelligence of this mechanism is that it knows what layer to dissolve in the moment. This is the beauty of Shaking Medicine, we learn to let go of control, something that most of us are never doing, so that our nervous system can vibrate it's way back to homeostasis as this trauma onion dissolves layer by layer.

Is Shaking Medicine Hard to Learn?

Learning Shaking Medicine emphasizes relaxation, surrender, allowing, and intuition over control. Yet, it’s relatively easy for most because it’s an instinctive mechanism—it feels like remembering rather than learning something new. This modality is fundamentally unique and profound for many people because it shares how to truly let go of control, which is something that almost no other aspect of our culture does, even Yoga practices (which are great) are teaching how to control the body, breath, mind, etc.

  • Quick and Easy to Access: ~95% of people experience therapeutic tremors in their first class, and pretty much all within a few sessions.

  • Guided Techniques: Our Beginner’s Course uses various strategies, shapes, and explorations to awaken your shaking, starts moving the tremors through you, especially the bigger muscles groups, and explores tremoring shapes in standing, on all fours, the belly, on the side, and on the back.

  • Tips for Beginners: If tremors are slow to emerge, relax and diligently stay with the guided explorations. Softening, slowing down, or changing positions (focusing on a new body part) can help. Subtle tremors are as effective as big ones—size doesn’t matter. Don't be attached to getting every suggestion in a class. Early on what is more important is to find any tremoring and start to build your connection to it.

  • Don't Force: Forcing tremors can hinder the process. Be patient and really tune in. Forcing the shaking is a different kind of shaking called voluntary shaking, which is good for us though it is very surface level compared to the profound benefits of Shaking Medicine's therapeutic tremoring, which is spontaneous shaking.
