Who He Is

Dr. Keith R. Motes

People meet a physicist who learned to let the body lead. The tremor came first, in his own meditation, near the end of a quantum physics doctorate in Sydney. The years since have been given to making that instinct safe, teachable, and shared.

He grew up in Louisiana. During the doctorate he published 14 peer-reviewed papers, completed yoga teacher training, and became a dual Australian–US citizen. On the Certified Shaking Medicine Teachers directory he is listed in Ubud, Bali.

“Something spoke to me. It said, relax and surrender. And I did.”Keith, in conversation with Mike, Conscious Masculinity, 2022

The Shaking Medicine Foundation is an Australian not-for-profit. It exists to awaken the innate therapeutic tremoring mechanism worldwide, so people can heal trauma, make the practice second nature again, and return toward homeostasis. Shaking Medicine is the conscious, safe practice of that mechanism: safety, permission, and deep relaxation, with no forcing. The tremor arises when you soften and let the body lead.

The hands-on work is its own devotion. He trained in person with Gwyn Williams, founder of Zenthai Shiatsu, and has practised that bodywork for five years, inside more than fifteen years of Yoga, Qi Gong, and the healing arts. Chinese Qi Gong massage, learned through the works of Dr. Yáng, Jwìng-Míng, lives in the same hands: pressing, kneading, and tapping, with the tremor still welcome.

“Being a part of this wonderful Zenthai Shiatsu family is an absolute blessing, and it’s an honour every single time I get to hold a precious human being in my hands with unconditional love and grace.”Keith, on his Zenthai Shiatsu practice

What he keeps returning to, besides the teaching, is Zenthai Shiatsu, Yoga and Qi Gong, Acro Yoga and Flying Therapeutics, snowboarding, and Contact Dragon-Staff.

How He Came to This Work

Dr. Keith R. Motes seated by a river, eyes closed, playing a singing bowl

Shaking Medicine, as a somatic modality, was born through his own experience.

Near the end of his doctorate, in a deep meditation, spontaneous therapeutic tremoring arose. He was a physicist and a yogi at the time. His body began trembling, pandiculating, and making spontaneous sounds, releasing childhood trauma he had not consciously known was there.

“I knew intuitively that nothing about that was scary. It was the most blissful thing, to purge and release all this energy I was holding on to.”Keith, on how Shaking Medicine began

That rebirthing became a lifelong devotion: making this ancient mechanism safe, teachable, and available again. Shaking Medicine is the modality he has been developing full-time ever since — science, spirituality, and ancient wisdom on a yin, non-forceful path. He trains facilitators to hold the work with creativity and care.

You can read the longer lineage story, including the animals, indigenous shaking cultures, and modern pioneers the practice draws from, in The Roots of Shaking Medicine.

What He Teaches

He teaches the practice of therapeutic tremoring, and the arts that shaped how he holds it.

  • Shaking Medicine

The body’s innate, involuntary tremor for releasing stress, trauma, and tension. You do not do the shaking. You soften until the instinctive healing mechanism can move you.

“It’s kind of like an immune system for our nervous system.”Keith, Therapeutic Tremoring for Vibrant Health

His private online courses live in the Shaking Medicine school community. Joining a course is how you enter that community, and practise with other people until the tremor is second nature. What it feels like.

    Yoga and Somatic Movement

Yoga, and the somatic movement he teaches with it. The tremor is welcome in the posture, so the body can stay soft and the practice can become second nature. He completed yoga teacher training during the doctorate.

Studied privately with him, this is cultivation.

  • Qi Gong

Qi Gong, and the spontaneous style he created: Neurogenic Qi Gong, also called Zifa Gong. Standing, breathing, and moving, with the tremor welcome, so the practice can become second nature.

“Neurogenic Qigong — a unique, spontaneous style that flows as a living branch of Shaking Medicine.”Keith, on the Qi Gong he created

It is also called Shaking Medicine Qigong. The classes are in the Shaking Medicine school community, alongside the courses. Studied privately, this is cultivation.

  • Zenthai Shiatsu and Somatic Bodywork

Hands on the mat. Zenthai Shiatsu and Chinese Qi Gong massage in the same session: pressure, stretch, pressing, kneading, and tapping, with Shaking Medicine in the touch. He trained in person with Gwyn Williams. The films are just below.

“I love to inspire. It’s what motivates me to practise Zenthai Shiatsu, to pioneer Shaking Medicine, and to embody and teach Yoga and Qi Gong.”Keith, on his Zenthai Shiatsu practice
  • 90-Day Transformation

The flagship private container. Weekly sessions with Keith, and a coherent arc long enough for the nervous system to change. It can be trauma healing or cultivation of practice. The courses in the school community are the wider way in. This is the personal hold.

  • Personal Transformation Retreats

A Personal Transformation Retreat, fully tailored. Days rather than hours: you come to Keith, gather in the middle, or engage him on-site. The days mix guided Shaking Medicine, healing, cultivation, somatic bodywork, Neurogenic Qi Gong, and time in nature — often in Australia, Bali, Thailand, the States, or Europe.

  • Teacher Training

Learning to hold Shaking Medicine safely, teach in your own voice, and join the certified teachers. The curriculum is IICT-approved and keeps evolving from indigenous shaking cultures, Yogic and Taoist arts, modern somatics, and what is learned by training teachers worldwide.

The day a graduate receives their certificate, they can purchase professional liability insurance in 39 countries. Certified teachers are listed in the worldwide directory.

In Person

Somatic Bodywork

Somatic bodywork, Acro Yoga, and therapeutic flow. These films are from sessions on the mat: Zenthai Shiatsu and Chinese Qi Gong massage, with Shaking Medicine in the hands. A session can also lift into Flying Therapeutics, the therapeutic shape of Acro Yoga. No two are the same. Each one is a moving meditation. The bodywork page is where you can read how a session goes, and book time with Keith.

Credentials

  • PhD in Quantum Physics, completed in Sydney, Australia — the scientific lens he brings to the work.
  • 14 peer-reviewed papers published during that doctorate. See the record below.
  • Yoga and Qi Gong teacher. Yoga teacher training was completed during the PhD.
  • Zenthai Shiatsu bodywork therapist, trained in person with founder Gwyn Williams.
  • Extensive training in Yoga, Qi Gong, Zenthai Shiatsu, Chinese Qi Gong massage, and somatics.
  • Founder of the Shaking Medicine Foundation, an Australian not-for-profit, and developer of Shaking Medicine, an internationally accredited somatic modality with IICT-approved teacher training.

Alongside those credentials is deep personal embodiment: his own transformations with trauma release through shaking, so he teaches as a living example of the work.

Send Him a Message

If you feel called to practise, to work privately, or simply to ask a question, send him a message. Tell us a little about where you are and what you are hoping for.

After you write, we can have a short intro conversation and help you find the next step that fits — community practice, a private offering, or teacher training.
